Last Saturday, 35-year-old NBA star Lamar Odom checked into a VIP suite at Dennis Hof's Love Ranch brothel in Nevada, where he allegedly went on a four-day bender of and drugs.
On Tuesday, two prostitutes visited his suite and discovered him unconscious, with blood coming out of his nose and white stuff coming out of his mouth, as they told a 911 dispatcher.
A brothel manager called 911 a second time, providing more details about Odom's condition, including the amount of cocaine he had ingested and the use of sexual performance enhancers.
Odom was eventually driven to the Sunrise Hospital & Medical Center, where he is currently in a medically induced coma.
Medical Emergencies at Brothels ¶
The incident raises questions about the frequency of medical emergencies at brothels and the protocols in place to handle such situations.
According to a Swiss report, seven customers died while visiting brothels between 2004 and 2014.
An American Heart Association report found that 93 percent of married men who died of sudden death during did so due to extra-marital in unfamiliar settings, which increase stress levels.
Coronary heart disease is so common, a lot of times the first sign is when they have sudden cardiac death, said Atlanta cardiologist Dr. David Montgomery. It's a very ominous statistic. And it is very clear that people have heart attacks while engaged in activity, including ual activity.
Dr. Montgomery noted that while crazy with multiple partners may not necessarily increase a healthy person's risk of an episode, someone who is not healthy and visits a brothel is more likely to have a problem.
Protocols for Medical Emergencies ¶
Nevada's brothels have different protocols in place for handling medical emergencies.
Donna Huff of Donna's Ranch in Wells, Nevada, said, We're going to call an ambulance. We're not going to put someone in a bed and forget about him until they start stinking, for God's sake.
Jennifer O'Kane, owner of the Calico Club in Battle Mountain, Nevada, agreed but claimed that Dennis Hof's Love Ranch handled the situation incorrectly.
I tell you right now, I'd be firing those bitches, she said, referring to the employees who placed the 911 call. You don't tell them there's cocaine or drugs. They just ruined [Odom's] life.
O'Kane emphasized that brothels are supposed to be quiet and that she would have handled the situation differently.
