On a sunny day in July 2019, three women, Hawa Milimo, Mary Muricho, and Josephine Abwao, embarked on a journey to revolutionize the tours and travel industry in Kenya.

With a combined experience of 10 years in the industry, they identified a gap in the market and decided to fill it by starting their own business, Iconic Getaway Safaris Ltd.

According to Mary, 'We decided to come together because pulling forces is easier, the risks are shared other than doing it alone.'

The three women pooled their savings and received additional support from friends and family to raise the initial capital of approximately 1.5 to 2 million.

Despite their combined expertise and resources, Iconic Getaway Safaris Ltd faces significant challenges, particularly in marketing.

As Hawa notes, 'Marketing requires a lot of money and a lot of time. Everything else we are able to brainstorm and come up with solutions.'

However, the women remain motivated by the positive feedback from their clients, who appreciate the unique experiences they offer.

Josephine explains, 'One thing that gets us out of bed in the morning is knowing that you took a client somewhere for a honeymoon or an anniversary, they enjoyed, they sent you photos, they sent you a referral…that is how Iconic is growing.'

The company's goal is to become a leading tours and travel brand not only in Kenya but also in Africa, with a presence in Europe, the US, and Australia within the next five years.

As Mary advises budding entrepreneurs, 'Start with what you have, where you can and don’t follow hearsay. The journey is not easy but you have to be strong.'
