A vehicle believed to be part of President Uhuru Kenyatta's convoy was involved in a fatal accident in Kakamega, sparking outrage among local residents.
The incident occurred when a white Toyota Land Cruiser, registration number GKB 742E, ran over an 80-year-old man, killing him instantly. The vehicle also seriously injured the man's grandson, who was carrying him on a motorcycle.
Confrontation and Police Intervention ¶
The driver attempted to flee the scene but was blocked by a crowd of angry residents. Some protesters chanted choma yeye! weka gari moto!, threatening to set the vehicle on fire. However, police intervened, engaging the crowd in running battles and eventually overpowering them to rescue the driver and the vehicle.
President Uhuru Kenyatta has not publicly commented on the incident or apologized to the victim's family, further fueling anger among the locals.
Denial and Comparison ¶
Police later denied that the vehicle was part of the President's convoy, claiming it was a police car patrolling the area in preparation for the President's visit. This incident bears resemblance to another recent event where Deputy President William Ruto's motorcade injured two school girls in Muranga. Unlike President Kenyatta, Ruto apologized to the families of the affected girls.
