The Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) national executive council has scheduled an urgent meeting for Friday to address the growing rift between Secretary General Wilson Sossion and Chairman Mudzo Nzili.
A national executive council member, Harrison Gichira, stated that the meeting was convened due to public disagreements between the two union leaders on various education sector issues.
Gichira, representing the central Kenya region in the NEC, noted that such discord undermines the union's direction. He also expressed concern that Knut is losing influence among its members and criticized Sossion for allegedly alienating the union from the current government.
Gichira cited Sossion's recent contradictory statements regarding the revision of term dates and the examination calendar by Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i as an example of the secretary general's actions without proper consultation.
According to Gichira, "Sossion is running the union as personal property." He warned that the NEC might take unspecified action against individuals who destabilize the union from within. Gichira listed several instances where the top union officials have publicly disagreed, including Sossion's call for a boycott of Labour Day celebrations and his directive to teachers not to undergo appraisal.
The NEC aims to prevent the union's disintegration due to individual actions.
