President Uhuru Kenyatta has arrived in Mogadishu, Somalia, to attend the inauguration of new President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo.
Uhuru arrived on Wednesday, February 22, and was given the honor of addressing guests at the ceremony, alongside Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn and Ismail Omar of Djibouti.
In his address, Uhuru promised to work with the new Somalia government to bring peace and stability to the war-torn nation. He also addressed the drought menace that has ravaged the region, particularly in Kenya and Somalia.
The ceremony was attended by representatives from 124 countries, and Mogadishu was placed under complete lockdown due to security concerns. Special forces from the Somalia National Army, police, and the African Union Mission to Somalia created a security cordon around the venue.
Kenya is a close ally of Somalia and has a large military presence in the country, fighting against the terrorist group al-Shabaab. Security forces were on high alert due to threats of an attack from the group.
Farmajo won the February Somalia election, defeating 19 candidates, including former leader Hassan Sheikh. The voters in the election were limited to 275 members of parliament and 54 senators.
