The government of Burkina Faso has ordered the exhumation of the remains of Thomas Sankara, the former president who was killed in a 1987 coup.

This move will allow for the formal identification of the remains, a demand long made by Mr Sankara's supporters who sought proof that the remains were indeed his.

Thomas Sankara, viewed by many as Africa's Che Guevara, was buried hastily following a coup led by his successor, Blaise Compaore.

Blaise Compaore resigned from the presidency in October of the previous year amidst widespread street protests.

Prior to his resignation, a court in Burkina Faso had blocked a request from Mr Sankara's family to exhume his remains during Compaore's tenure.
