In 2002, before Raila Odinga endorsed Mwai Kibaki with the phrase "Kibaki tosha," Kibaki’s presidential prospects seemed dim. Following a car accident on December 3rd, 2002, Raila Odinga used his personal credit card to cover Kibaki’s flight to London and initial hospital fees. Despite this support, after becoming president, Kibaki repaid Raila by forcing him out of the government within two years.
In 2007, after losing to Raila and William Ruto, Kibaki turned to Kalonzo Musyoka for support to maintain power, promising him GEMA backing in 2012. However, in 2013, Kibaki supported Uhuru Kenyatta instead, reneging on his promise to Kalonzo.
Uhuru Kenyatta’s path to the presidency in 2013 was significantly paved by William Ruto’s support. As part of their agreement, they planned to form a 50-50 government and work together to dismiss the ICC cases against them. Uhuru Kenyatta made considerable efforts to have his ICC case dropped.
With his ICC case now behind him, Uhuru Kenyatta has been engaging in domestic activities, such as visiting Kisumu and interacting with locals in markets like Mwembe Tayari in Mombasa. This shift indicates a reduced need for international diplomacy related to his legal issues. Meanwhile, he appears to have abandoned William Ruto, despite past agreements.
