Devolution Cabinet Secretary Anne Waiguru led an advance team to the United States ahead of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), sparking controversy over the size of her delegation and the associated expenses.
Government Delegation Expenses ¶
A government source stated that Waiguru traveled to New York with nearly 10 staff members, including her media team and personnel responsible for her welfare, with their expenses to be covered by Kenyan taxpayers.
President Uhuru Kenyatta was scheduled to fly to the US with his own delegation but did not do so as planned.
Allegations of Preferential Treatment ¶
The move comes amid allegations by the opposition that Waiguru receives preferential treatment from President Kenyatta. During a CORD rally at Uhuru Park, Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale questioned the nature of Waiguru's relationship with the President, asking him to clarify her role.
Machakos Senator Johnstone Muthama also made comments about the relationship between Uhuru and Waiguru, stating "Uhuru anafikiria tu mambo ya Waiguru na pombe," which translates to "Uhuru only thinks about Waiguru and alcohol."
Context and Controversy ¶
The decision by Waiguru to travel with a media team, despite the President's communication team (PSCU) being part of his delegation, has raised questions about the necessity and cost of her actions.
