Residents of Mathare constituency expressed outrage after the brother of area Member of Parliament Steve Kariuki was discovered with 1,000 identification cards. It is alleged that he was secretly registering voters at the Mathare Sub-county headquarters.
According to a Mathare political leader who chooses to remain anonymous, there is tension in the area after Kariuki was also allegedly found registering voters in the area Constituency Development Fund offices. The two separate incidents forced Kariuki and his brother to flee, but the brother was caught and is currently locked up at the chief camp cells.
Kariuki is currently an ODM rebel but he plans to run on a Jubilee ticket in the upcoming 2017 General Election. Cases of illegal voter registration have been reported in the past few days as biometric voter registration kits have been found in lodgings and houses registering voters past the allocated time.
The IEBC voter registration exercise was scheduled to end on Tuesday, February 14, but a Nairobi court ordered the deadline be extended by two days. The 'officials' registering people have also been found with illegal documents, as was the case in Eastleigh when 1,500 voter transfer forms and 3,000 identification cards were recovered with a kit allegedly stolen by the al-Shabaab in Mandera East.
The recovered account cited reporting by Tuko.
