A Catholic nun in Nakuru was arrested on Monday for allegedly obstructing public health officers from administering the measles-rubella vaccine to children at her school.
Ms Cecilia Kamau, who is also the head teacher of St Anthony School in Engashura, Bahati, spent the night at Bahati police station following her arrest.
The school, run by the Catholic Diocese of Nakuru, opposes the vaccinations, according to reports.
Immunization Exercise ¶
A 10-day immunization exercise, which concluded recently, aimed to target 19 million children between the ages of 9 months and 14 years.
Nakuru County public health officer Samuel King’ori stated that the nun would be charged with obstructing public officers from performing their duties.
No amount of intimidation will prevent our officers from administering the jab, which is critical to the health of those targeted.
King’ori added that they had achieved a 91 percent success rate so far and that girls and women aged between 14 to 49 years would also receive maternal neo-natal tetanus vaccination in 24 high-risk sub-counties.
Vaccination Opposition ¶
Vaccination and immunization campaigns in Kenya have faced opposition from some churches and sects in recent years. In 2015, the Catholic Church warned that a tetanus vaccine campaign was contaminated.
