A Fox Studios spokesman confirmed that footage from the 2013 Westgate Mall attack was used in an episode of 24: Legacy, according to QZ.com. The producers expressed regret for using the footage to depict a fictional act of terror.
In the episode, actress Miranda Otto, playing Rebecca Ingram, refers to the clip as showing a terrorist attack at a market in Alexandria, Egypt.
After the news broke, Kenyans on Twitter started the hashtag #SomeoneTellFox, expressing disappointment and demanding an apology from the American broadcaster.
Executive producers Evan Katz and Manny Coto issued a statement, saying, "In episode 4 of 24: Legacy we regretfully included news footage of an attack in Nairobi. It will be removed from all future broadcasts and versions of the show. We apologize for any pain caused to the victims and their families and are deeply sorry."
The footage will be removed from all future broadcasts.
