In a crackdown on alleged drug trafficking, Tanzanian police arrested over 10 individuals, including celebrities, in Dar es Salaam over the weekend.
Those arrested include Wema Sepetu, TID, Dogo Hamidu, and radio presenter Babuu wa Kitaa, along with six others. Additionally, several other celebrities, such as Vanessa Mdee, Nay Wa Mitego, Idris Sultan, and video vixen Tunda, have been linked to the alleged trade.
Diamond Platnumz, one of Tanzania's top-earning stars, was summoned to appear at the investigation premises on February 6th in connection with the allegations.
According to Dar es Salaam Provincial Commissioner Paul Makonda, a list of suspected drug traffickers, including police officers and artists, was released on Friday, with orders to record statements at a Dar es Salaam police post on Saturday.
Dar es Salaam police boss Simon Sirro stated that the operation to arrest suspected drug traffickers began on Friday, with five people apprehended, and an additional 12 arrested on Saturday, bringing the total number of suspects in police custody to 17.
A special unit, comprising the police and other investigative agencies, has been established to hunt for drug barons operating in Tanzania. Other suspects, including singer Vanessa Mdee and video vixen Tunda, are scheduled to record statements with the police.
The Tanzanian government has been working to combat drug trafficking, but several Tanzanians have been arrested in connection with the illegal trade outside the country, with some reportedly facing severe penalties, including execution in countries like China.
