An audit ordered by Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i is set to be released, throwing a section of Kenyans into panic as many will potentially lose their academic papers.
The Commission for University Education (CUE) announced a plan to release an audit on academic papers, prompting concern among Kenyan universities and degree holders.
Gretsa University, which awarded Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho a degree in Human Resource Management, has defended his academic papers. Vice Chancellor Kuria Thuo stated that the university had complied with the required standards, citing that Governor Joho was on a long-distance program since 2014 and graduated having satisfied the board of examiners and University senate.
According to The Star, Vice Chancellor Kuria Thuo said,
"He was on a long-distance programme since 2014 and graduated having satisfied the board of examiners and University senate,"
There were claims that Joho's degree was fake, which could have discredited him and locked him out of the August General Election. However, he graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Commerce from Gretsa University in Thika in December 2016.
Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i had warned politicians who were awarded degrees without meeting the required qualifications that their papers might be recalled.
