Published on July 23, 2019, David De Gea, the Spanish international goalkeeper, has revealed his ambition to lead Manchester United as captain in the upcoming Premier League season.
De Gea, who has been with the Red Devils since 2011, is on the verge of signing a new six-year deal that will see him earn £375,000 a week at Old Trafford.
Having been captain for some games, De Gea expressed his desire to take on the role full-time, saying, "It's amazing, so of course I'll be really, really happy to captain. It's my ninth season and I feel like one of the most experienced players."
He added, "I need to show that on the pitch and try to help the young guys know what Manchester United means and that's important."
De Gea's current deal expires in the summer of 2020, and the new contract will commit him to the club for the next six seasons.
Manchester United's manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, is yet to decide on the team's captain for the upcoming season, with Paul Pogba also in the running for the position.
