The government has provided Sh10 billion for the basic salaries and house allowances of public university staff, covering the period of 2013-2017 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) for the Universities’ Academic Staff Union (Uasu), Kenya University Staff Association (KUSA), and Kenya Union of Domestic, Hotel, Educational and Allied (KUDHEHIA) workers’ union.
According to Uasu chairman Muga K’olale, the unions rejected an attempt by the Inter Public Universities Council Consultative Forum (IPUCCF), chaired by Prof Ratemo Michieka, to include pension in the agreement. K’olale stated, "We told them to go to the National Treasury and get something extra for pension. We want further advice on whether part of the government’s offer can be used to cover pension contributions."
K’olale emphasized that negotiations for the 2017-2021 CBA should commence immediately, with the aim of submitting the agreement to Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i by April 2017. He added, "We will meet today to discuss how the money will be distributed among the three unions." The unions have maintained that any negotiations must be conducted through the IPUCCF, ruling out direct engagement with individual universities to resolve the ongoing strike.
The Uasu strike will continue until the 2013-2017 CBA is fully negotiated, signed, registered, and implemented.
