According to unconfirmed reports, more than 100 students may have been taken hostage by the Al Shabaab militia during the dawn attack at Moi University Garissa campus, with at least 15 confirmed killed.
The Red Cross reported that around 50 students had been freed, while the fate of others remained unknown.
Witnesses described terrified students fleeing buildings, including some young men who were shirtless, as police officers arrived and took cover.
