July 22, 2019, marked a day when entrepreneur MURORI KIUNGA shared a crucial lesson on business success: drifting away from your core business is a recipe for ruin.

According to KIUNGA, drifting away is not a phenomenon exclusive to the seas. Apostle Paul's warning to early Christians, 'Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind...' (Romans 12:2a), echoes the importance of staying on course in business.

KIUNGA recounts the story of a successful business that has been deteriorating over the years, citing the owner's unawareness of the cause of his woes. In his judgment, the owner's problems stem from drifting away from the course, abandoning the things that brought him success.

As a leader, it is easy to drift away and bring one's life and business to ruin. KIUNGA identifies several indicators of drifting away, including:

  • Moving away from your core business without a strategy.
  • Losing touch with the operations of your business.
  • Forgetting people and things that helped you get to the top.
  • Not being updated on what is happening in the business.
  • Not monitoring, evaluating, or inspecting key employees.

KIUNGA emphasizes the importance of measuring and inspecting what matters in business, citing the management adage, 'People respect what you inspect.' He concludes that if you don't measure it, people won't do it, and if you don't inspect it, people won't respect it.
