Six police officers attached to the Traffic Department were charged with receiving over Sh36,000 in bribes from motorists in Murang'a and Nairobi Counties.
Those charged include Inspector Seth Nalyanya Barasa, Corporal Caroline Chelangat, and Police Constables Evanson Mureithi Munyaka, Abdi Khalif Madobe, Shadrack Ngatia Kioni, and David Maina. They appeared before Senior Principal Magistrate Lawrence Mugambi at the Milimani Law Courts anti-graft court.
Inspector Barasa and Constable Munyaka denied being arrested with Sh20,500 by EACC officers at Mukeu area along the Kenol-Thika Road. The two, attached to Makuyu Police Station, are suspected of receiving the money as bribes to overlook traffic offenses.
Evidence and Charges ¶
The prosecution, led by Assistant Director of Public Prosecutions Daniel Karori, submitted that the suspects used their positions to improperly benefit themselves. Constables Madobe and Kioni were arrested with Sh14,300 by EACC officers at Mukeu along Thika-Kenol Road.
Other arrests included Corporal Chelangat, who was arrested on November 18, 2016, with Sh900 allegedly received as a bribe at the City Stadium roundabout, and Constable Maina, arrested on the same day with Sh1,600 at the City Stadium roundabout along Muthurwa Road.
Trial and Bail ¶
A matatu conductor, Susan Muthoni, denied offering a bribe of Sh1,600 to avoid a traffic charge. Magistrate Mugambi granted bail to four of the accused, ordering them to pay cash bails of Sh60,000 each, while the other two were ordered to pay Sh30,000 each. Their trials are set to commence on March 23, 2017.
