Alphose Kambu, accused of savagely beating his estranged wife, Ruth Gakii, on October 21, has apologized to her parents, who are demanding Sh40 million in compensation.
Kambu, a UNEP employee and computer programmer, allegedly assaulted Ruth, the mother of his 3-year-old son, and was reported to the police. Women’s rights activists have threatened to protest if Kambu, who reportedly enjoys diplomatic immunity, is not arrested and charged.
According to reports, Kambu sent Ruth a text message asking her to move to a public hospital, citing inability to afford private hospital treatment. Ruth received treatment at the Nairobi Women’s hospital, where Kambu was not allowed to visit her.
Ruth’s father has publicly demanded compensation, prompting Kambu to apologize to the family.
