Allegations have surfaced regarding the misuse of funds donated for President Uhuru Kenyatta's 2017 campaign. According to reports, KSh 80 million intended for voter mobilization in Nyeri County has gone missing.
The funds were allegedly provided by Mount Kenya billionaires supporting Uhuru's re-election. However, local leaders claim the money was misused by the campaign team in Nyeri for personal gain rather than its intended purpose.
A secretariat established in Nyeri County to address poor voter turnout was supposed to receive and manage these funds. Muthui Kariuki, a member of the secretariat, denied any wrongdoing, stating that only KSh 6 million was donated and was used for voter mobilization.
Kariuki said,
This is a lie. I can confirm no one has been given money by the secretariat, and all the money has gone to the actual recruitment on the ground.
Despite these denials, the Nyeri secretariat faces criticism from local leaders, including Othaya MP Mary Wambui, who accuse it of sidelining them in decision-making processes and the implementation of voter recruitment drives.
