A senior police officer and a civilian were shot dead in a drive-by shooting in Kahawa West, Nairobi, on Tuesday night. Inspector Michael Ziki of the Administration Police was shot 17 times in his car by gunmen near the Kiwanja AP camp.
Circumstances of the Shooting ¶
At least 17 bullet heads were collected from the scene. Ziki was the in-charge officer of the camp and was described by locals as a dedicated worker who served them well. His passenger, who was in the private car they were using, also died in the shooting.
According to Kiambu County police boss James Mugera, the attackers had been trailing the deceased before the shooting incident. The shooting occurred at about 9 pm, and the gang used an AK47 rifle in executing the murder.
Investigation and Response ¶
Police said they were yet to determine the motive of the shooting and identify those behind it. Mugera stated,
We are yet to know the motive of the shooting but it looks like a pure murder and robbery. They grabbed his gun and left after the shooting.
Other officers noted that the use of an AK47 rifle suggested a well-planned and executed murder, as such a weapon is rarely used by ordinary thugs.
