The Kenya Medical Association (KMA) has suspended Health Cabinet Secretary Cleopas Mailu and his Principal Secretary Nicholas Muraguri from membership for one year. The decision was made after the two were accused of not standing with the striking doctors.
The suspension comes a day after doctors' union leaders were sentenced to one month in prison for contempt of court. The KMA has called on its members in the private sector to down their tools if the jailed doctors are not released.
Private doctors in Mombasa have announced a 48-hour strike in private hospitals, starting Wednesday midnight, to show support for their colleagues behind bars. The doctors have vowed that no negotiations would take place while their union leaders are still locked up.
