NTV journalist Larry Madowo recently shared his Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) score, revealing that he obtained a B- grade. Madowo expressed no regrets over his performance, instead criticizing the emphasis placed on high grades.
Madowo recounted his experience taking the KCSE exams, stating that he did not study diligently and instead focused on reading novels. He noted that during his time, an A grade held significant value, often guaranteeing admission to prestigious courses such as medicine and engineering.
However, Madowo argued that the value of high grades has been diminished due to widespread cheating. He cited the 2015 KCSE exams, where a record number of A grades were recorded, amidst allegations of cheating. According to Madowo, the Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) and education lecturer Dr. Andrew Riechi questioned the credibility of the exams, while Education Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang'i acknowledged that the exams were conducted under challenging circumstances.
Madowo claimed that many students who scored high grades may not possess the necessary knowledge and skills, and that the pressure to perform well can lead to unethical behavior. He shared his own story of finding success despite not exceling academically, pursuing a career in journalism and convincing employers to hire him despite lacking formal qualifications.
