Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet has issued a terror alert, stating that Al Shabaab militants are preparing to carry out attacks in Nairobi and other parts of the country.
According to Boinnet, available information suggests that the militants may be mobilizing in Somalia and could take advantage of the rainy season to infiltrate Kenya's borders and stage attacks in the North Eastern and Coast regions, as well as in Nairobi.
Boinnet emphasized that security agencies are on high alert and urged the public to provide information that could help prevent the planned attacks. He also warned that the terror threats are still alive and that Al Shabaab and its sympathizers are keen to cause harm.
To enhance security, Boinnet announced that security would be increased at public places such as shopping malls, bus stations, entertainment joints, places of worship, and schools. He called upon the public to cooperate with security agencies and private guards, especially during searches.
In a related development, police recently released photographs of five Kenyans, including a suspected female suicide bomber and her husband, who are wanted for links with Al Shabaab. The five individuals are currently in Al Shabaab camps in Somalia but are believed to be planning to sneak into Kenya to carry out attacks.
Additionally, two terrorists from Tanzania were arrested in the ongoing Operation Linda Boni. One of the suspects, Mashuud Bashir Hamisi, had previously been deported from Kenya in January last year but managed to sneak back into the country using the sea route to evade detection.
The arrest of these two Tanzanian nationals is seen as evidence that Operation Linda Boni is making progress in preventing youth from Kenya and neighboring countries from joining Al Shabaab in Somalia.
