Comedians in Kenya are re-inventing themselves and changing the landscape of the laugh industry. According to Grace Wachira, the internet has played a significant role in this transformation, with many comedians turning to social media as their primary transmission channel.
In recent years, comedians such as Churchill, Eric Omondi, and Chipukeezy have given comedy in Kenya a new face. The rise of social media has further accelerated this growth, enabling comedians to reach a wider audience and build their personal brands.
New Platforms, New Opportunities ¶
Comedians are now creating content on various social media platforms, including YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, and Twitter. This shift has allowed them to attract a large following and monetize their content through product endorsements and other business opportunities.
For instance, Jaymo Ule Msee has perfected the art of creating witty videos and has endorsed several corporate products, including the KCB banking app and 4G Safaricom. Wangari Nguri creates videos in Kikuyu, making light of everyday occurrences and offering advice on various issues. She has gained popularity and even earned a nickname, 'Auntie Jemimah,' for her humorous take on everyday life.
Henry Desagu draws inspiration from everyday life, creating clips that often go viral. His talent has caught the attention of mainstream media, and he has made appearances on local satirical TV shows. Seth Gor gained international recognition after creating a parody of Chef Salt Bae, earning him the title 'Africa's Salt-bae' on social media.
From Online Fame to Mainstream Success ¶
The 'Witnesser' and 'Serikal Saidia' duo, comprising Jane Anyango Adika and Jose, have also made a name for themselves online. Adika's plea for government assistance after her village was flooded led to her being appointed as the Floods Ambassador of Nyamira county. The duo has also featured in Safaricom adverts, including the famous Skiza Tunes.
These comedians have demonstrated that building a strong online presence can lead to significant opportunities in the entertainment industry. By leveraging social media, they have been able to grow their fan base, secure product endorsements, and even transition into mainstream media.
