Nairobi City County government is under fire for neglecting its own health recommendations at City Market, a notorious hub of food vendors.
According to a letter dated May 2018, Deputy Director of Public Health Wilson Langat warned of an impending health hazard at the market due to unlicensed food handlers.
Langat's letter recommended the removal of all hawkers without valid medical certificates, citing concerns over food safety.
However, despite these warnings, the county has yet to implement the necessary measures, with Langat attributing the delay to political interference.
‘‘Yes we are to be blamed but moving forward we are seeking political good will so that we can ensure that when we crack the whip we don’t experience political challenges and other external forces,’’ Langat said in an interview with Ghetto Radio News.
A recent spot check by Ghetto Radio News revealed that hawkers are still selling meat and chicken on the bare pavement, raising serious health concerns at City Market.
