A young mother from Nairobi moved Nairobi Senator Mike Sonko to tears with her story, prompting him to intervene and offer help.
Edith Wangui, who hails from a humble background, was detained at Fatima Maternity hospital for almost a month for failing to raise a medical bill of KSh 155,000. She lost her husband when she was four months pregnant and underwent a complicated cesarean section at the facility.
Sonko shared the story on his Facebook page, congratulating different groups, including Kilimani Mums, Rongai mums, pregnant and nursing mums groups, for raising half of the medical bill and bringing the plight to his attention.
Sonko's rescue team is now hosting a free medical camp at Nyayo Stadium to provide free supply of medicine, laboratory tests, ultrasound scan, cervical and prostate cancer screening, family planning, free HIV testing, and donate sanitary pads and NHIF registration.
