Two opposition Members of Parliament, Suna East MP Junet Mohammed and Kisumu Central MP Ken Obura, have been directly implicated in the Sh791 million National Youth Service (NYS) saga.
Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria issued a two-week ultimatum to former Devolution Cabinet Secretary Ann Waiguru to name the remaining beneficiaries of the scam, or he would go public with their names. Additionally, 52 other legislators from the Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (CORD) are said to have benefited from the NYS scam.
Response from Elgeyo Marakwet Senator ¶
Elgeyo Marakwet Senator Kipchumba Murkomen claimed that Waiguru was attempting to hold the Presidency at ransom by dragging his name and that of National Assembly Majority Leader Adan Duale into the scam. Murkomen stated,
Waiguru sent emissaries to ask the President and his deputy to halt investigations so that she can stop linking their names to the saga. We are not going to be held at ransom.
Murkomen further emphasized that the President and his deputy cannot be hoodwinked to stop the war on corruption by such games, and that Waiguru must carry her own cross.
Deputy President William Ruto's Remarks ¶
Deputy President William Ruto accused CORD of involvement in numerous corruption scandals and warned them against lecturing the Jubilee administration, stating that they have no moral authority to do so. Ruto said,
No government in the history of Kenya has shown commitment to tackle corruption like Jubilee (has).
Ruto also urged Jubilee supporters not to be derailed by the graft allegations and instead focus on the voter registration exercise.
Consequences and Reactions ¶
Ruiru MP Esther Gathogo asked Waiguru to carry her own cross and cease carelessly dragging names into the saga, supporting allegations by Josephine Kabura and accusing Waiguru of employing use and dump tactics.
Soin-Sigowet MP Justice Kemei stated that those linked to the NYS scandal must carry their own cross and face the full force of the law. Kemei emphasized that those implicated in graft scams should be made to return the stolen loot.
