Nairobi Senator Mike Sonko has responded to allegations of land grabbing related to a 134-acre piece of land in Karen.
Sonko stated,
I have been accused and named by my colleagues in the CORD coalition as one of the beneficiaries or grabbers who grabbed the Karen land just because I was spotted at the scene.
He clarified that being present at the scene does not imply involvement in land grabbing. Sonko mentioned his efforts in repossessing public land and schools, including Visa Oshwal School in Westlands, Buruburu Girls School, Langata High School, Kamkunji Secondary School, St. Catherine Primary School, Huruma Children's Home, and Nairobi School Playground.
Sonko explained that he was approached by an 89-year-old widow who claimed to be the administrator of her late husband's estate, Mr. Mburu, the former Nairobi County PC and registered owner of the 134-acre land in question. The widow alleged that Dagama Rose, who claims ownership, was a family advocate and had been trying to take the land.
Sonko provided documents and newspaper cuttings related to the case and stated that he visited the scene with the widow's relatives, finding a group of Maasai morans guarding the land.
