More than 100 members of President Uhuru Kenyatta's Jubilee Party from the Mt. Kenya region have defected to the Party of National Unity (PNU).
The members, mostly from Embu county, were received by PNU party chairman and Meru Governor Peter Munya on Tuesday, February 21.
Munya stated that the defectors chose PNU because they believe the party has democratic values. He added that more members are expected to defect in the coming days.
The defectors were led by Embu gubernatorial aspirant Kithinji Kiragu and several sitting MCAs. According to Munya, PNU will become stronger not only in Embu County but also in Kenya, with offices in all parts of the country.
This development follows another defection of leaders from the area to Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua's Maendeleo Cha Chap, led by Embu county Senator Lenny Kivuthi. Kivuthi cited concerns over the upcoming Jubilee nominations favoring certain individuals as the reason for his decision.
Former advisor to Uhuru on education matters, Kilemi Mwiria, also defected to Maendeleo Chap Chap.
