Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) has expressed concern over an increase in wild-meat trade around Naivasha.
The agency warned that the meat, which is dangerous for human consumption, is being transported to Burma market in Nairobi.
A recent arrest in Naivasha involved a suspect caught with over 200kg of zebra meat packed in gunny bags, destined for Nairobi.
According to Hapicha Ellema, the officer in charge of Hellsgate National Park, the suspect was arrested in Manera village while packing the meat. Ellema stated that individuals involved in the illegal trade target ready markets in Nairobi, Gilgil, and Nakuru.
Ellema noted, "Cases of wild-meat trade around Naivasha are on the increase mainly around the highway and farms inhabited by squatters."
Following the arrest, Ellema attributed the rise in wild-meat trade to the high number of wild animals straying outside protected zones, identifying areas such as Ndabibi, Gatamaiyu, Longonot, Gilgil, and parts of Moi Ndabi as the most affected.
Ellema urged the public to contact KWS officers if wild animals stray onto their farms or homes.
