A female employee at Serena Hotels, who wishes to remain anonymous, has come forward with allegations of widespread mistreatment of casual workers at the hotel. According to her account, female casual employees are often forced to choose between granting sexual favors to their superiors in exchange for permanent positions or remaining in casual roles indefinitely.
The employee, who claims to have worked as a waiter at one of the hotel's lodges in Kenya for four years, stated that casual workers are threatened with termination if they inquire about the possibility of permanent employment. Despite initial promises of potential permanent employment or contracts within six months, many casual workers have been left waiting for years.
The employee also alleged that casual workers are not entitled to allowances such as service charge, despite performing the bulk of the workload. Furthermore, they claimed that women who become pregnant while working as casuals are at risk of being terminated, effectively forcing them to choose between their jobs and starting a family.
When confronted with these allegations, the management of Serena Hotels responded by requesting the employee to contact the HR director, citing the company's policies.
