The Kenya Medical Association has suspended Health Cabinet Secretary Cleopas Mailu and his Principal Secretary Nicholas Muraguri from the country's medics association.

This action comes a day after doctor's union leaders were sentenced to jail for contempt of court. The association accused the two of not standing with the striking doctors, resulting in their suspension for one year.

Context

The KMA decision follows the sentencing of doctors' union leaders to one month in prison for contempt of court. In response, the association has called on its members in the private sector to down their tools if the jailed doctors are not released.

Private doctors in Mombasa have also announced a 48-hour paralysis of activities in private hospitals to show support for their colleagues behind bars.

Response and Consequences

The doctors have vowed that no negotiations will take place while their union leaders are still imprisoned. The situation remains unresolved, with the medical community showing solidarity with the jailed union leaders.

The recovered account cited reporting by Tuko.
