Barely a day after confirmation of the death of Mohamed Kuno, also known as Gamadheere, the Al Shabaab terrorist believed to have masterminded the massacre of 148 students at Garissa University in April, reports emerged suggesting he may still be alive.
The Ministry of Interior and Coordination of National Government retracted its earlier report that Kuno, who had a Sh20 million bounty on his head, was dead. Interior Spokesman Mwanda Njoka clarified on social media that the US drone attack in Jungai area, Somalia, did not kill Kuno but instead killed Jamaa Adhere among others.
Njoka stated that the confusion was regrettable and emphasized that Mohammed Kuno is alive and at large. He urged Kenyans to provide any information that could lead to Kuno's capture, dead or alive. On Twitter, Njoka specified, "The 2 am drone strike killed over 30 terrorists, including one Jamaa Adhere, but he isn’t the Gamadheere of Garissa."
Official reports later confirmed that the drone attack resulted in the deaths of 51 Al Shabaab terrorists, including four top commanders.
