A group of legislators has declared that the National Super Alliance (Nasa) will be locked out of the Rift Valley region, claiming the area's support for the Jubilee Party is unwavering.
This declaration was made during a church service attended by Deputy President William Ruto, where eight politicians, including Energy Cabinet Secretary Charles Keter and Kericho Governor Paul Chepkwony, expressed confidence that the region would vote exclusively for Jubilee leaders in the upcoming August General Election.
Their statements come as Nasa principals Raila Odinga, Kalonzo Musyoka, Musalia Mudavadi, and Moses Wetang’ula campaign in the area, seeking support for their coalition.
The leaders' sentiments may also be seen as a reaction to recent remarks by Kanu leaders, who expressed support for President Uhuru Kenyatta's re-election but allegedly had reservations about Ruto.
Nasa Principals United ¶
On Saturday, Nasa principals held their first rally in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu county, where they vowed to remain united regardless of who would be chosen as the party's flag bearer.
Raila Odinga, speaking at a funeral in Kapsogut village, Bomet county, denied politicizing the construction of the Itare Water Dam project and accused the Jubilee government of failing to address the problems faced by the people.
Jubilee Dismisses Opposition Claims ¶
Keter, Chepkwony, and other MPs dismissed the notion that the Opposition is gaining ground in the area as propaganda and wishful thinking, maintaining that the region firmly supports President Uhuru Kenyatta and Ruto.
Keter stated, "Our loyalty to President Uhuru Kenyatta, Ruto, and the Jubilee Party is undivided... This region is fully behind the leadership of the Deputy President, Jubilee Party, and it shall remain so in August elections."
Chepkwony assured Ruto of unflinching support, while Cheruiyot criticized some regional leaders for undermining the Deputy President and failing to address banditry in their areas.
Ruto Calls for Peaceful Elections ¶
Ruto avoided the debate, instead emphasizing the government's commitment to ensuring a peaceful General Election. He pledged that the government would take necessary steps to prevent violence and ensure a fair democratic process.
