Interior Cabinet Secretary Nkaissery has lifted the dusk-to-dawn curfew in parts of Lamu County, specifically on Lamu Island.
A source at Statehouse noted that this move came within 24 hours of his appointment and was reportedly not welcomed by Statehouse operatives.
Nkaissery's decision aligns with a request made by CORD leader Raila Odinga to President Uhuru Kenyatta and the then-CS Joseph ole Lenku.
In a statement, Mr. Nkaissery announced that while the curfew has been lifted on Lamu Island, it remains in effect on the mainland.
The curfew extension until January 25 was based on the orders issued by the Inspector General of the National Police Service on November 21.
