A senior Mijikenda Kaya elder, Mzee Katana Kalulu, was shot dead by unknown assailants at his home in Jimba, Watamu, on Thursday night. He was over 90 years old and a member of the Malindi District Cultural Association and the Mau Mau War Veterans Association.
According to his daughter, Rehema Katana Kalulu, the gunmen attacked her father on the veranda as he listened to the 7pm news on his radio. She reported that she had just arrived to give her father water when the incident occurred. The attackers allegedly demanded money from Mzee Katana Kalulu, saying, "Mzee tumetumwa kwako wapi ile pesa" (Old man, we have been sent to you for that money).
