On July 22, 2019, Meru Governor Kiraitu Murungi announced a crackdown on beggars in Meru town, ordering their arrest and that of their accomplices.
The governor accused some individuals of exploiting people with disabilities for personal gain, and instead urged them to join the newly launched People with Disabilities (PWD) Sacco.
"All the people who bring in beggars to the streets should be arrested together with the beggars. I encourage them to instead join the PWD Sacco to benefit from skills training and financial support," Murungi said.
He revealed that Sh.15 million had been set aside to jumpstart the PWD Sacco, with Sh.10 million to be saved in the Sacco and the remainder used to train members in different fields.
The Sacco has 1,700 members, who showcased their merchandise, including shoes, school uniforms, handbags, and bangles, during the launch.
"We are ready to work day and night to ensure that the rights of the people with disabilities are respected," said Sacco Chairman Mike Makarina.
The Deputy Governor, Titus Ntuchiu, urged the Sacco board to come up with strategies for the wellbeing of people with disabilities in the county.
