On Friday evening, police in Kasarani shot and killed three suspected robbers who were riding a boda boda. Two loaded firearms were recovered from the scene.
A police officer attached to the Special Crime Prevention Unit was injured during the 4pm shootout with the suspects along the Mwiki-Kasarani Road.
According to Kasarani OCPD Robinson Mboloi, police had been informed that the suspects were planning a robbery and laid a trap for them. However, the suspects opened fire on the officers, who then returned fire, fatally injuring all three suspects.
Mr Mboloi stated, "The officers returned fire and all of the suspects were fatally injured. They recovered two pistols; a Ceska and a Beretta loaded with eight bullets in total." A motorbike used by the suspects was also recovered, and their bodies were taken to the City Funeral Home.
Investigation and Response ¶
The injured officer is receiving treatment for bullet wounds to the thigh at a Nairobi hospital. Ballistic detectives have collected spent cartridges from the scene for further investigation.
Nairobi County Police Commander Benson Kibue described the suspects as dangerous criminals who had been under police surveillance for some time. He said, "These were dangerous criminals and the fact that we have managed to find them is a great stride in the fight against crime in the city."
In a separate incident earlier that day, police arrested three suspects in Ngei Estate, Huruma, and recovered three pistols. According to Starehe OCPD Benard Nyakwaka, the suspects were hiding in a residential home and were found after police received tips from the public. The suspects are being held for questioning.
