A General Service Unit (GSU) officer is under investigation for allegedly raping his former sister-in-law at the unit's headquarters.
According to the woman, the officer lured her into his house on the pretext of sending her to deliver clothes to her nephew. Once inside, he allegedly raped her repeatedly, stating that he was seeking revenge because her sister had left him.
The woman reported that the officer used a different name and force number when signing in at the gate. She said he tied her up with bed sheets, gagged her with clothes, and threatened to kill her if she screamed.
After managing to escape, the woman reported the incident to officers at the gate, who took her to the Medicines Sans Frontiers (MSF) clinic for examination and treatment. A hospital report confirmed that she had a sexual encounter without protection and was vaccinated against Hepatitis and given Post Exposure Prophylaxis medication to prevent possible HIV infection.
Investigation Launched ¶
Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) Chairman Macharia Njeru stated that a team of investigators had been dispatched to the GSU headquarters to investigate the matter, which is being treated with utmost seriousness.
The case was booked under OB number 46/9/2/2017 at the Muthaiga Police Station and reported to IPOA under reference number IPOA/CMU/218/2017. The Nation obtained a recorded telephone conversation between the officer and the victim, in which the officer asked her to settle the matter without involving authorities to avoid losing his job.
Response and Consequences ¶
The GSU Commandant, Toroitich Chelimo, was unavailable for comment. The officer in question was reportedly on duty and deployed outside the station at the time of the inquiry.
