On July 22, 2019, Zain telecoms and Trinity Technologies launched the first mobile money service in South Sudan, dubbed m-gurush, which translates to mobile money in Arabic.
The service, licensed by the Bank of South Sudan and the National Communication Authority of South Sudan, aims to improve financial services in the country where unlicensed digital money operators have been operating.
South Sudan, Africa's youngest nation with a population of approximately 12 million people, has a relatively low mobile phone penetration rate, with only about 4 million people owning mobile phones.
According to Trinity Technologies Vice President Mr. Joseph Arinaitwe, the platform provides a range of services, including service payments, airtime top-up, and money transfer services.
The mobile money service is expected to benefit the unreached masses, particularly women, disabled people, and small and medium-sized businesses in South Sudan.
