Safaricom's TV Set Box, also known as 'The Big Box', was launched at the Safaricom Shop at Sarit Centre. The device is available for a one-off cost of Sh9,999 or Sh4,999 followed by 6-monthly payments of Sh999. Users can reload bundles using the 422# USSD code.
Apart from offering cheap data bundles, the device also provides free YouTube for users for three months via the YouTube website. The Big Box runs on Android and offers internet access via a 4G SIM slot, acting as a wireless hotspot and a gaming device.
According to @SafaricomLtd, the device costs Kshs. 9,999 as a one-off payment or easy payment of KShs. 4,999 deposit plus Kshs. 999 for six months.
The launch of the Big Box appears to be a play for home internet, particularly with the rollout of Safaricom's 4G/LTE Service. The device has HD and 4G capabilities, making it suitable for delivering Video on Demand. It can support up to 10 devices through its hotspot capabilities and offers around 35 channels.
@SafaricomLtd stated that the device is 4G and 3G enabled, allowing users to transmit 4G/3G signals through a hotspot if they are within a 4G/3G coverage area.
Bob Collymore, commenting on the launch, said, "We want to get into the entertainment space and provide access to content users want and not what the broadcasters want." The boxes will only be sold in Safaricom shops.
