A night out with friends at Maxland Club along Thika Road ended in tragedy when John Wanjohi, 29, fell to his death down the club's staircase.
Wanjohi, a father of one, was at the club with five friends on Saturday night. Four of his friends left around 2 am, leaving Wanjohi with Erastus, who spoke to Nairobi News about the incident.
Erastus said he and Wanjohi slept on the club's couches until around 8 am when they were woken up by cleaners. After waking up, Wanjohi left the club first, while Erastus went to the washrooms and realized his phone was missing.
When Erastus went back to ask the cleaners about his phone, one of them informed him that Wanjohi had fallen down the stairs. Erastus rushed to the ground floor, where he found Wanjohi in a pool of blood.
Erastus obtained an ambulance from Uhai Neema Hospital, but Wanjohi was confirmed dead on arrival. A CCTV footage of the incident has been shared on social media.
Funeral and Tributes ¶
Wanjohi's body was taken to the mortuary, and his family was notified. He was buried on Monday at his father's home in Iriaini village, Othaya, Nyeri County. Friends remembered him as a friendly and jovial person who loved having fun.
Wanjohi left behind a four-year-old son and a 25-year-old widow. An inquiry into the safety standards of the Mountain Mall, where the accident occurred, has started.
Safety Concerns ¶
According to one of Wanjohi's friends, the building's staircase has low rails that can cause accidents. There have been two similar incidents in the past, although both victims survived. The building has a functional lift.
The management of Maxland Club has not commented on the matter and has not contacted the bereaved family.
