A convoy of Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) soldiers escaped a planned attack by the al-Shabaab militia group on Tuesday, February 21, when a roadside bomb detonated after they passed the location where it was planted.
The incident occurred in an area between Abdalla-Biroole and Kismayo. Reports from Somalia indicate that only a few soldiers may have sustained minor injuries.
KDF and the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) had not released a statement on the botched attack at the time of reporting. AMISOM and other foreign forces have been taking the war to al-Shabaab strongholds with the intention of wiping out the group that seeks to overthrow the Somali government.
An image of the scene showed the aftermath of the explosion, but details of the damage and any casualties were not immediately available.
The al-Shabaab militia group had earlier attacked a Kenya Defence Forces base in Kulbiyow, prompting increased military activity in the region.
