Babies Blessing and Favour were transferred from Kiirua Mission Hospital in Meru County to Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) on 5th September 2014, just a day after they were born.
A physical examination at KNH showed that the twins were joined at the sacral region of the spinal cord. Their mother, 28-year-old single parent Caroline Mukiri, stayed at KNH for 2 years while doctors monitored the development of the twins' key organs to determine the best time for surgery.
The surgery, which took place on 1st November 2016, involved a team of over 50 medical specialists, including pediatric surgeons, neurosurgeons, plastic and reconstructive surgeons, anesthetists, and nursing teams.
After the successful separation, the twins lived at KNH until 14th February, when they were taken to an animal orphanage to spend quality time outdoors.
Blessing and Favour wore matching outfits - red dresses, white tops, stockings, and red shoes - as they left the hospital for the first time to admire nature.
