On July 21, 2019, Morocco coach Herve Renard announced his departure from the team following their shock exit from the Africa Cup of Nations.
Renard, a 50-year-old Frenchman, made the decision before the 2019 Cup of Nations, citing a desire to close a 'long and beautiful chapter' of his life, as he stated on Twitter.
Despite being among the pre-tournament favourites, Morocco was eliminated by outsiders Benin in a penalty shootout after winning all their group matches without conceding a goal.
Renard had previously led Zambia to victory in the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations and Ivory Coast to the title in 2015.
His departure marks the seventh coaching change among the 24 finalists in the Egypt-based tournament, which was won by Algeria in a 1-0 final against Senegal on July 19, 2019.
