British exploration firm Tullow Oil has discovered oil and natural gas deposits in Turkana. The company's Canadian partner, Africa Oil, also announced a gas discovery at another site in northern Kenya.
Tullow's discovery at the Ngamia-2 well includes 39 metres of net oil and 11 metres of net gas pay. This well is located 1.7 kilometres away from the Ngamia-1 site, where Kenya's first oil find was made in early 2012.
Africa Oil discovered gas deposits in a 1,000 metre range at the Sala-1 site. The company plans to conduct tests to determine the exact amount of the deposit and its viability.
These discoveries follow a recent oil find by Australia's Pan Continental Oil and Gas NL in the Lamu Basin. Together, they bring Kenya closer to commercial production of oil and gas.
