As the natural hair movement gains momentum, many are turning away from harsh chemicals and embracing their Afro-textured locks. But what are the basics to taking care of natural hair? On July 22, 2019, KBC Kenya's Watching shared some essential tips to get you started.
Start with a Good Shampoo ¶
Use a moisturizing shampoo at least once a week to wash your hair. Look for a shampoo that doesn't contain ammonium or sulphates, which can strip your hair of its natural oils.
Deep Condition for Healthy Hair ¶
Deep conditioning is a crucial step in maintaining healthy hair. Apply a deep conditioner after washing and leave it on for 20-40 minutes. You can use a hooded dryer or leave it on for longer.
Moisturize and Seal ¶
Just like your skin, your hair and scalp need moisturizing. Use a water-based moisturizer at least once a day and seal it with a natural oil like jojoba, tea tree, or coconut oil.
Protect Your Hair ¶
Protective styling is key to reducing manipulation and promoting hair growth. Try braids, twist-outs, or even a wig to give your hair a break.
Avoid Heat Damage ¶
Heat styling can be damaging to your hair, so try to avoid it as much as possible. Flat irons and blow driers can strip your hair of its natural moisture.
