On 21st July 2019, Robert Muthomi, the CEO of the Federation of Kenyan Football (FKF), stepped down to allow investigations into allegations that he tried to illegally sell Sofapaka and Harambee Stars striker John Avire to an Egyptian club.
The scandal centres around claims that the FKF played a part in helping John Avire land a deal with the Egyptian club without the knowledge of his current club, Sofapaka.
FKF President Nick Mwendwa has commended Muthomi for choosing to step aside amid investigations, describing it as a sign of how the federation has grown.
Speaking at a press conference, Mwendwa attributed the scandal to the lack of experienced agents in the football industry, saying that in most transfer deals, negotiations are made between the parent club and the player.
The interim CEO, Barry Otieno, who was the head of communication at the federation, will hold the position until the investigations are complete.
Investigations are ongoing, and the findings will be made available to the media in due time.
