A 26-year-old woman, Pauline Mukami, has come forward with allegations against her married boyfriend, a renowned businessman in Tala town, claiming he forced her to procure an abortion at a private hospital in Athi River.
According to Ms Mukami, she was in a relationship with the man, who had initially employed her as a bar maid at his club in Nguluni, Tala, before they started dating. When she became pregnant in March, she claims her boyfriend told her to abort the pregnancy, citing that he was not ready to be a father.
Ms Mukami stated that after she refused to comply with his request, her boyfriend turned violent and attempted to evict her from their shared home with the help of his two brothers. She alleged that the three men physically assaulted her, leaving her with injuries on her leg.
Following the incident, Ms Mukami reported the matter to the police, and her boyfriend was arrested but later released. In August, he contacted her again, and they met at a joint on Eastern Bypass, where he allegedly pretended to want to rekindle their relationship.
Ms Mukami claimed that her boyfriend tricked her into accompanying him to Athi River, where he took her to a private hospital. There, she alleged that he gagged her, and two men injected her with a substance that made her sleep until 3 pm. Upon waking up, she discovered that she had undergone an abortion.
A medical report from Kangundo District Hospital confirmed that an abortion had been procured without Ms Mukami's consent. The report stated, 'She was forced to procure an abortion on 16/8/2015 by a well-known person without her consent.'
Athi River police boss Kizito Mutoro told Nairobi News that the matter is still under investigation and that the divisional criminal investigations officer is waiting for the victim to provide more details to aid in locating the hospital where the abortion was procured.
